Music is truly the international language and at the British International School of New York music is offered to all of the children twice weekly.
Children are introduced to a variety of musical styles and are encouraged to listen to music from all over the world. Singing and movement are integrated into the classroom through games, and children as young as four years old learn that music can be read from a score and translated into sound.
In reception and year one the children learn about timbre, dynamics, tempo, pulse, pitch and texture. The introduction of percussion instruments combined with listening, singing and music games ensures that a child starts their musical journey with an understanding that music is fun. These skills are extended into years two and three with introductions to composition and performance. Years four and five begin to explore melodic and rhythmic notation and are encouraged to compose their own work.
Precorder is introduced to the children in years reception and year one and Recorder is introduced from year 2.
The British International School offers private instrumental instruction in a variety of instruments, including voice. All of the lessons are taught by New York’s finest professional musicians and teachers.
All of the children have the opportunity to perform in winter and summer concerts and there are also many other opportunities for the children to perform during the academic year.
It is the goal of the music program to inspire children to enjoy music. Music within the school should be fun and memorable for the child and something that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
