Martha Lerski

Both life experience and academic training prepare Ms. Lerski to encourage children to read and to appreciate libraries within the context of an Internationally-minded curriculum. Graduating with a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and after having spent her junior year abroad at The London School of Economics, she entered the foreign currency market, first with a British firm and then at a Swiss Bank. Though a native of San Francisco, California, Ms. Lerski developed a love of art while viewing Buddhist sculpture when living in Sri Lanka as a young child, and she pursues this interest as a wood and stone carver, as a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York, and by exhibiting her sculpture. Following her love of learning and a desire to impart her enthusiasm, Ms.Lerski taught writing and literacy to adults and also administered a high school equivalency program at a CUNY program in the Bronx.  Before and while pursuing her MLS at the Queens College CUNY Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, Ms. Lerski worked as a librarian at a Manhattan elementary school. She graduated from Library School with a subspecialty in children’s services, and a Master’s thesis on digital poetry.

In building BISNY’s library collection, and in holding class library sessions, Ms. Lerski promotes research skills and works to enrich both the children’s classroom studies and to support the children’s interests which extend beyond the curriculum.
